Sermon: Bitter sweet

TEXT: JOB 30:1-14
The demarcation between joy and sorrow is just a
step. That is why a joyful heart can quickly slip into
utter gloom in a matter of seconds. It is a paradox.
A man may live a life of bliss, joy and happiness,
having everything that makes life worth living, with
people around him pouring encomiums and
sharing from his dainty. But the scripture cautions
that we should remember ‘the days of darkness’.
When it is well with us, we are praised and adored.
But when the tide turns against us, we become
objects of scorn and derision.
Job’s previous state of glory and abundance had
been described in chapter 29. And now, he
experiences suffering and deprivation. What a
contrast! What a twist of fate! He had become the
object of contempt by the same people he had
earlier assisted in their penury. Suffering such
extreme loss was bad enough, but to be abused by
derelicts and upstarts was to add insult to injury.
His mockers spared no thought for his bravery and
calmness in his suffering.
In a twinkle of an eye, the tide can turn and our
fortunes nose-dive. Our misfortune may create the
opportunity for mockers and revilers to have a field
day, feeding on our fallen state. Such mockers may
include younger people and those who have
benefited from our largesse when the going was
good.
There is the need for self-examination when our
condition becomes adverse to ensure we are still at
the centre of God’s will. And young people who
mock elders in distress should remember that
their own physical abilities and attributes wear out
with the passage of each day and that God watches
all our actions. Like Job, our trials would be over
soon, if only we put our confidence in God.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The only thing constant is
change.

When asked if he has any plans to float a clothing line, the Five Star music artiste said, ‘Well, for a while now, me and my fans have been fighting on a lot of fashion issues, on who knows how to dress and who doesn’t, but for mow my focus is not on setting up a clothing line now, I’m focused on making more good music for my fans to enjoy. In the future if I’m less busy and I have the time I might consider it but for now, I’ll stick to music and dressing up myself, if I like I can combine 25 colors at once it’s still fashion.'

We Went Through Hell To Survive-Chibok Girls Who Escaped From Boko Haram-

We have heard some of the abducted Chibok girls were lucky enough to escape. These are the accounts of some of those lucky girls who have since been reconciled with their parents. Sunday Vanguard met with four of the escapee girls whose heroic accounts are recorded below.

First is Saratu Isa, 19, who wants to become a teacher some day. Narrating her story, she told Sunday Vanguard that after their SSCE papers on the fateful day, they retired to their hostel to rest and prepare for the next day’s papers. In the night, they slept. She woke sometime later. She also woke up her friend, Comfort Ayuba (born on March 28, 1997), and asked her if she heard the rumour that Boko Haram was about to invade the school. The friend said it was a lie, yet they attempted to locate a safe corner within the hostel to use as hideout if the Islamicterrorists eventually entered the school. But before they could secure a hideout, they started hearing barking orders to other girls in the hostel.

“The claim of people saying that the jihadists came to the school with so many vehicles is not true. No! Their vehicles were packed far away inside the bush. They came in and told us they had come to protect us from an impending danger, since there was no security in the school and immediately they started assembling us in a single file and marching us to the bush.”
It was at that point that some of the girls started having hunches but it was too late to do anything because the invaders, armed to the teeth and dressed in army uniform, were barking orders that any girl who attempted to play games would be killed and it was obvious that they were not joking.

Three girls were saved by divine intervention. According to Saratu, two Christians and one Muslim who arrived the park late and wanted to play a fast one. The insurgents asked them their religion and one of the Christians said she was a Muslim. The Muslim identified herself but the third girl didn’t deny her religion. She said she was a Christian. They asked her to change her religion or be killed; she said she would rather die than change her religion.

Didn’t we ask you not to go to English School?

I was born here in Chibok and have never been to any Taboc School. I was born into a Christian home and will remain a Christian.

So the three girls were asked to lie down and that they were going to kill them, beginning with the unrepentant Christian. Without displaying any emotion, the Christian girl was the first to lie down saying they should go ahead and kill her.

And a debate among the Boko Haram men, with some of them saying they should kill the kafir (infidel) while others argued against it. So she was asked to get up. We were all still in the bush where the vehicles were. The Boko Haram men continued their argument as to whether to kill or not to kill the Christian. Soon the vehicles the men brought were full and there was no space for the three girls. So they were asked to go. So the three of them left and started heading home.

“We trekked the long distance into the bush where they had parked their lorries and other vehicles. Soon after, the vehicles began a voyage into the forest. We were five that were locked up in the booth of a car and we had no means of knowing how long; the journey took. We were just there until God knows how long; then they came to a final stop. While we were moving, the five of us were praying and hoping that people or the army would pursue and catch up with them. Eventually we entered Sambisa. When we entered Sambisa, we were given bread and water and told to eat. Of course, the girls were too angry to accept the offer of food. So, they refused to eat. The men attempted to persuade them to eat.
“On arrival, we discovered that an earlier batch had arrived the same destination that looked like the camp of militants. As soon as we arrived, Comfort came up with an idea that we look for a convenient place to ease ourselves. We told the men that we needed to ease ourselves and they allowed the three of us to go. After we walked some distance from the camp, Comfort said we should make haste and run away.
“The third girl, a Muslim, with fear written all over her, said we should not run away when we had not eaten and weak; but Comfort insisted that that was the only chance we had to escape. She added that she would not die in this forest”. Saratu followed her while the third girl returned to the camp.
“We kept walking away from Sambisa forest. As we progressed in the escape bid, we met one man. He didn’t say anything to us. We didn’t know what he was doing inside the forest but we were too afraid to find out. Later, we met another woman who also didn’t talk to us.
“Eventually, we came to one village and met one Fulani man who gave us water and food. We were too hungry and thirsty and so we ate. He directed us where to follow to our village and so we continued the journey until we met two men . The men were kind; gave us water and clothes to change the ones we wore. Initially, we refused because we were afraid. We kept going, but one of the men followed us, saying they were only trying to help.
“As we went on, we met another man who told us to come and sleep in his house because it was night already and we entered the house, believing God had planted angels on our path to freedom. We entered and slept in his house. The man woke us up at about 3:00 a.m. and told us that the village people were wicked and if they found out we were there, they would kill us. He directed us where to follow, warning that if we saw any motorcycle or vehicle, we should enter the bush.
“He insisted that we should avoid being noticed by anybody. The man told us that when we hear a call to prayers, we should stop wherever we are until the prayer is finished. We saw a man and asked him direction to our village and he told us. We continued until we arrived Chibok where we met the army personnel. After narrating our story, they took us to the barracks where we took our bath and were given food to eat”. Altogether, they spent five days between the time they were captured and the time they returned home.Rahab Yaya was born on August 8,1998 in Chibok. Her escape story:

“Like Saratu and Comfort, he also decided that there was no way the night would meet us in that thick forest. So, we followed the example of our two colleagues, pretending we needed to ease ourselves and, after much pleading, they allowed us thinking that we would be afraid and return in no time because of the fearful nature of the forest. We walked a long distance and always making sure none of the men was trailing us.
“All through the night, we continued our journey to freedom. We went without food and water for several days, hoping we would see persons who would be sympathetic to our plight.
“But no help came until dawn, the next day, when a Good Samaritan who heard our story, out of pity, gave us bread and water. He told us to be careful because the insurgents were operating in the neighborhood, seeking who to kidnap. With renewed strength, we continued even when we didn’t know where we were going.
According to her, after several days of a seemingly unending trauma, without clean up and any change of clothes, they eventually arrived Chibok to the warm embrace of their parents who had searched everywhere for them and immediately people recommended that they go to hospitals for necessary treatment.

N Korea 'agrees to restart talks with South'

Seoul says Pyongyang has expressed "willingness" to restart dialogue between late October and early November.

North Korea and its southern rival have reportedly agreed to discuss resuming formal dialogue after the communist state sent its highest-level delegation to Seoul.

South Korea's unification ministry said on Saturday that the two sides had agreed to work on resuming formal, high-level talks, which have been effectively suspended for seven months.

"The two sides agreed to discuss details for the resumption of the high-level contact," the ministry said in a statement.

The agreement came during a surprise visit to South Korea by three top-ranking Pyongyang officials, two of them close aides to the North's supreme leader, Kim Jong Un.

Seoul has been urging the North to resume the talks for several months, but until now Pyongyang had spurned the request, partly in irritation over the South's military drills with the US.

The ministry statement said the North Korean delebation had expressed a "willingness" to restart the dialogue between late October and early November.

The last high-level talks were held in Seoul in February and resulted in the North hosting a reunion for families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

The visit coincided with the ending ceremony of the Asian Games, being held in Incheon near Seoul, and amid speculation that the North's leader may be in poor health due to obesity.

Kim has not been seen in public since September 3 and state-controlled media showed him in July limping at a ceremony, and last week again broadcast the footage.

There have been long-running rumours that a coup had taken place in the country. North Korean officials at the UN have dismissed the speculation.

The two Koreas are technically still at war because their war ended in a truce and not a peace treaty.

The North has been under UN sanctions for its nuclear and missile tests, which deepened its international isolation but it has expressed willingness to return to talks with key world powers including the US and China.

MTV Base Should Never Ever Make A List Again

So the buzz has been going on social media over a list by MTV Base titled “Top 20 Best Naija Tracks Ever” emphasis on ‘Ever‘. This sham of a list has the following songs

2Face – African Queen9ice – Gongo AsoD’banj – Oliver TwistP-Square ft. Waje – Do MeWizkid – Holla at your BoyDavido – Dami DuroIce Prince – OlekuD’banj –Why MeM.I – SafeOlu Maintain – YahoozeeNaeto C – Kini Big DealDavido – SkelewuBanky W – Lagos PartyWizkid – PakorumoAsa – JailerP-Square – Chop My MoneyWande Coal – Bumper to BumperDr SID – SurulereFlavour – Nwa Baby (Remix)Kcee – Limpopo

I think the oldest song on here is 2face – African Queen released in 2004.

So let me understand something. There were no songs in Nigeria before 2004? Or were the songs before then all rubbish? Or is that Naija music is just 10 years old.

What happened to songs from Onyeka Onwenu, King Sunny Ade, Felix Liberty, Osadebe, Fela, Junior and Pretty, Mike Okri, Eva Edna Ogoli, Christie Essien Igbokwe, Daddy Showkey, Tony Tetuila… I mean Shina Peters’ Afro Juju is still in rotation at parties till date and it’s almost 25 years old. This is endless.

This is not a slight at any of the artists featured on the list as if this was done with just the past 10 years in mind, then most would deserve to be on there, but if you say ‘Ever‘, then in my humble opinion only 2face – African Queen, Dbanj – Oliver Twist, and 9ice – Gongo Aso would qualify to be discussed.

We’ll all never agree when it comes to lists and compilations as opinions always differ but this list is as myopic and insulting as they come with no kind of research or analysis done with it. For MTV Base it’s extremely poor, and shameful. You’d think they would know better.

Please MTV Base, just leave the lists alone, because it’s very clear that it’s not what you guys are good at. Great job on music video coverage though.

Google Deletes N*de Pictures Of Celebrities From Internet

In response to a potential lawsuit, Google has deleted thousands of photos of nude celebrities posted online.

A statement from the web giant said it has deleted photos “within hours” of requests being made and has “closed hundreds of accounts.”
It comes after reports Hollywood entertainment lawyer Marty Singer has threatened to sue Google for “violating privacy”.
In response, Google said, “Our turnaround is generally hours, not weeks.
“Of course people continue to post these images on the web, so – like other online services – we rely on people notifying us to help us take them down, whether by flagging content, or filing DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) requests.”

Google said, “We’re removing these photos for community guidelines and policy violations (eg nudity and privacy violation) on YouTube, Blogger and Google+.

“For search we have historically taken a different approach as we reflect what’s online – but we remove these images when we receive valid copyright (DMCA) notices.”

American pop star, Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, better known on stage as Ashanti, suffered an awkward wardrobe malfunction at an enthusiastic musical performance at the Bovi’s well attened Man of Fire comedy event.

While making her first performance on stage, the American singer found it hard to connect with the large crowd of fans which attended the comedy concert held at Eko Hotel & Suite V.I on Friday, October 3, 2014.

The ‘Girls in the Move’ singer was clearly in an uncomfortable situation where she was trying to adjust her cloth after it got loose on stage.

With all efforts trying to achieve the aim having failed, the singer made a quick exit from the stage without her dancers, to show the extent of her discomfort.

And her dancers, on immediately noticing her leaving the stage, also made their way out too.

Ashanti made her way to the back stage after suffering wardrobe malfunction on stage.

Boko Haram Kills 3 Poly Students Awaiting NYSC Postings

Three students of Kano State Polytechnic were yesterday confirmed dead as another explosion went off in the metropolis.

The blast, which occurred at the main campus of the polytechnic, also injured seven other victims, who have been rushed to the Murtala Mohammed Hospital.

The blast went off a few minutes after 2pm at the gate of the Central Administration of the school, hitting a number of students who had gathered to check their postings following the release of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization list that had just been pasted on the notice board. The Rector, Prof. Dalhatu Mohammed Galadachi, confirmed the explosion on the campus located on BUK Road, saying that the blast was most unfortunate.

Witnesses fingered a young girl wearing a black veil (hijab) as the agent of death , saying she slipped into the crowd of students unnoticed and blew herself up. They said that it was the impact of the explosion that killed as well as injured those immediately around her at the time of the explosion. The corpses were removed to the morgue.

Speaking to Daily Sun, the Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Adenrele Shinaba, described the suspected bomber “as, a teenage girl wearing black veil (hijab)” while confirming that three persons, which included the s*****e bomber herself, died.
The commissioner expressed concern over the fact that recent s*****e bombings in the state were carried out by young girls wearing veils.
He said that despite his concern, the police have no role to play with regards to the mode of dressing by the public, noting that as a security organization, the police have been sharing information with the appropriate authorities regarding the disturbing trend in which s*****e bombers hid their bombs under their veils. “I don’t have the power to choose the mode of dressing of the society. I can only advise. That decision is not mine to make. But this is no time for sentiment. We have to face reality. We have been sharing our information on this with the government. We don’t know what they would do with it,” he said.
Meanwhile, a state of anxiety has enveloped the state capital as residents have adopted fresh security measures to beat the deadly ploys of the insurgents, among which include avoiding places of high human traffic or vehicles and to limit their movements to only highly essential needs and callings.

Also, in some quarters in the state capital, residents simply avoid direct or close contacts with young girls wearing veils even as checks have also shown that the mode of dressing in a long veil is no longer fashionable to the ladies given the suspicion it evokes from the public and security agencies.
